7 Tips for High-Tech Education
1. Get fast "always on" internet access. A cable or DSL connection allows for quick downloads and speedy searching reducing your child's research time.
2. Teach children to search. Effective use of search engines will help your child find the correct information in the least amount of time.
3. Be a guide, not a guard. Today's children must develop their own internal firewall as they learn to navigate through banners, spam, or worse.
4. Check your software. Make sure you have the essentials including an up-to-date browser, a word processor with spell check that can read school files at home, and a presentation program.
5. Let them walk before they run. There is a development sequence to computing activities. Make sure your child is working at his or her appropriate level.
6. Teach by example. If you want technology to enrich your child's education, let him or her see how it enriches yours.
7. Establish tech-free times. Carve out routines that let you "instant message" face-to-face. That means no computers, cell phones, Gameboys or PDA's - just old fashioned conversation!
